Diaries of an Immortal is a short film created and directed by Lydia Adkinson. I feature as Alex, alongside Sarah Keogh as Evelyn, two immortal lovers who reach a divide in their long relationship once Eve decides she has lived for too long. I contributed several original cues to the soundtrack, which also features several songs key to the characters' relationship.
The score is built around three motifs, the first and foremost of which is the circling theme from "An Eternity from Now" (track twelve), which relates to Eve and Alex as a pairing. This theme is briefly introduced in "Page One" (track one), although descends into rising strings before it can complete a full statement. It appears throughout "I've Had My Time" (track two), the first of the incidental music cues, played on a reverberating piano. This track also introduces Evelyn's Theme (heard in full as "Evelyn", track four) as she explains her decision. Track three is one of two waltzes on the soundtrack, containing the third motif intended to call back to the couple's earlier, carefree lives, seen throughout the film in several flashbacks.
"My Story Needs An Ending" (track five), riffs on "Page One", and includes the main theme on high keys. Track six, "Why?", is the second incidental cue, combining piano and strings for both primary motifs as Alex and Eve's argument intensifies. The latter half of the track includes a sombre version of "Remembrance" (track eleven). "Waltz #2" (track seven) provides a faster, alternate version of "Waltz #1". The moody "Macabre" (track eight) repeats several statements of the main theme on synth and strings.
With the argument becoming hopeless on Alex's side, "How Can I Save You?" (track nine) introduces a minor string melody as he attempts to fathom Eve's reasoning. The main theme returns briefly as they share a lighter moment of melancholy, before Eve ends the argument and calls the string melody back in lower pitch, joined by cello before fading out. "Last Wish" (track ten) ends the story with a lamenting version of the couple's theme on piano. The theme is heard in full in "An Eternity from Now", seguing a playing of the waltz motif partway through. The final track, "Immortal Call", is a demo for the introductory cue, containing a fanfare before recalling the orchestral statements of the main theme from "Macabre".
