By the Sword is a short Wingless Films production starring myself and Rick Stear, mostly as an excuse to dabble in a little sword-play with a handy prop. Although not overtly, the short naturally took inspiration from Oriental swordsmanship, and in particular I had scores such as The Last Samurai and Kung Fu Panda in mind whilst composing the music.
Soundtracking By the Sword turned out to be one of the more challenging projects of recent months, primarily because the film compacts a lot of shifting in and out of action and movement in a short space of time. The theme was one I'd already created, around January 2013, and used it in combination with the opening drum pattern originally intended for Resurgence. Drums in particular were something I wanted to incorporate, having recently listened to M83's score for Oblivion (which contains some effective indie drumming), and hype for the drum circles assembled for Hans Zimmer's Man of Steel was circulating at the time.
The first two tracks are from the film, followed by a full, album version of the main theme and a short rendition on guitar, piano and wind flute, and one of several early versions of the opening.
